Fernando Valenzuela changed MLB history forever, inspiring a generation of fans and uplifting the Latino community in Los Angeles and around the world. “Fernandomania” ushered in a new era for the Dodgers leading them to a World Series victory in 1981.
Besides witnessing his remarkable career, I had the privilege of working with him years later when he returned to the Dodgers to serve as the team’s Spanish-language commentator. Fernando’s talent on the field was matched only by his humility and dedication to the sport. As we are on the eve of another World Series with Dodgers facing the Yankees, I will be thinking of him and his family — never forgetting the magic we all felt in his presence on the field and through his voice.
Fernandomanía por siempre.
